Union Maritime Equips Tankers with Norsepower Wind Sails

Under a new agreement with Union Maritime, four new chemical tankers, each with a deadweight tonnage of 18,500 and designed by Shanghai Odely Marine Engineering Co, will be equipped with Norsepower’s Rotor Sails. These tankers, intended for operation on the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes in the US, will each feature two Rotor Sails. The ships will be constructed at Fujian Southeast Shipbuilding Ltd. and Wuhu Shipyard Co. Ltd.

Additionally, eight more Union Maritime ships will be prepared to accommodate Rotor Sails in the future, making retrofitting easier. Heikki Pöntynen, CEO of Norsepower, highlighted the significance of this deal as a major step towards decarbonizing the maritime industry, with a total of eight Rotor Sails to be installed on four vessels initially and eight more ships set up for future retrofits.

Bhuvnesh Dogra, Head of Technical at Union Maritime, emphasized the importance of wind propulsion in their energy optimization strategy and expressed excitement about integrating Norsepower’s innovative technology to enhance sustainability efforts.

Union Maritime has recently committed to installing wind power systems on 34 ships in its fleet, including BAR Technologies’ WindWings, and is making a significant strategic equity investment in BAR Technologies.
