New SSD Requirement for EU-GB Imports Begins January 2025

Starting January 31, 2025, all businesses importing goods from the European Union to Great Britain must submit a Safety and Security Declaration (SSD) or Entry Summary Declarations (ENS). This new regulation, introduced by the UK government, aims to enhance border security and improve risk management for imported goods. The SSD requirement applies to both shippers and carriers, ensuring that every shipment complies with customs regulations and does not pose security threats. This change is part of the UK’s broader post-Brexit customs policy, reinforcing stricter border controls and aligning with international security standards.

The Safety and Security Declaration is a mandatory document containing key shipment details, such as the type of goods, sender, recipient, and transport route. Its purpose is to provide customs authorities with advance information, allowing them to assess potential risks and streamline processing at the border. This measure helps prevent illegal trade, counterfeit goods, and other security threats, ensuring a more controlled and efficient customs process.

For businesses, this change introduces new administrative requirements and potential costs. Importers must submit the SSD before goods arrive at the UK border, failure of which could result in delays, fines, or shipment detainment. Companies must also prepare for increased paperwork and longer clearance times. Non-compliance may lead to significant penalties, making it crucial for businesses to integrate SSD submission into their logistics operations.
