MSC, a major player in the maritime sector, is expected to further solidify its dominance in the liner industry, according to Sea-Intelligence’s analysis. After overtaking Maersk in 2022, MSC rapidly expanded its fleet, currently leading by 1.55 million slots. Sea-Intelligence predicts MSC will maintain its lead, with Maersk slipping to third place by 2026, behind CMA CGM. Having surpassed 5 million TEU in fleet size, MSC is projected to exceed 7 million slots by April 2026.
Additionally, MSC will operate independently on key trade routes after ending its partnership with Maersk in the 2M alliance. With investments diversifying beyond its core sectors, including a recent $700 million bid for Gram Car Carriers, MSC continues its expansion.
Analysts advise Hapag-Lloyd to brace for competition from Japan’s Ocean Network Express (ONE) and strategize to retain its position among the top carriers, aligning with its 2030 strategy aiming for a spot in the top five.
