HMM’s Shift Toward Carbon Capture in Shipping

South Korean shipping company HMM is taking a leading role in reducing emissions by implementing onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) systems for vessels that are unsuitable for conversion to cleaner fuels like LNG or methanol. According to HMM director Kim Min-kang, OCCS technology offers a practical solution to manage CO2 emissions from older ships without extensive retrofits, which would be costly and unrealistic for much of their fleet.

This year, HMM tested an OCCS system on the ship HMM Mongla, making it the first Korean carrier to trial this technology, developed in partnership with Samsung Heavy Industries, Panasia, and the Korean Register of Shipping. Current systems capture about 60-70% of onboard CO2 emissions, and HMM is exploring ways to repurpose this carbon for industrial uses, such as welding at shipyards, to aid in advancing commercial adoption.

HMM’s sustainability goals include reaching a 40% low-emission fleet by 2030 through the adoption of biofuels and expanded use of OCCS systems.
