EU Reaffirms 2035 CO2 Car Ban

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reiterated the EU’s commitment to ending sales of CO2-emitting cars by 2035 following her re-election. The EU will also revise car policies to include the use of e-fuels. Her re-election was secured with 401 votes in the European Parliament, indicating stability amidst Europe’s political challenges. Green lawmakers, who had initially opposed her, supported her this time, while members of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s party voted against her.

The EU faces significant challenges ahead, including ambitious climate targets, potential trade conflicts with China, and the possible return of Donald Trump, which could influence support for Ukraine. In her new term, von der Leyen aims to sustain the EU’s climate goals, boost competitiveness, and fortify defense industries. She announced a “Clean Industrial Deal” within her first 100 days to enhance European manufacturing and set a course for a 90% reduction in emissions by 2040.
At 65, von der Leyen will tackle fresh challenges, leveraging her first term’s experience with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ukraine invasion, and an energy crisis.
