Ethiopian Airlines Plans Mega Airport to Transform African Aviation

Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s leading airline, has partnered with Arabian consultancy firm Dar Al-Handasah to design a state-of-the-art “mega airport city” 40 km from Addis Ababa. This new hub, provisionally named Abusera Airport, is central to Ethiopian Airlines’ 15-year strategy to become a top global aviation group. The airport aims to enhance Ethiopia’s position as a key transit point between Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

The ambitious project includes a terminal covering 1.1 million m², airline support facilities of 126,190 m², and over 100,000 m² of cargo infrastructure. It will accommodate 270 aircraft, and an express rail link will connect the airport to downtown Addis Ababa. Designed for sustainability, the airport will feature renewable energy and water reuse systems. Expected to be completed by 2029, the airport will initially handle 60 million passengers annually, with a future capacity of 110 million—four times the current capacity of Bole International Airport.

Ethiopian Airlines’ CEO, Mesfin Tasew, highlighted the project’s potential to drive economic growth and strengthen African aviation. The airport will also integrate Ethiopian cultural elements into its design, reflecting the nation’s heritage while promoting innovation and sustainability.
