EU Updates Vehicle Safety and Emission Rules

The European Commission has proposed new road safety rules to better reflect today’s vehicle landscape, especially the rise of electric cars. Measures include regular checks for older and electric vehicles, inspections for driver-assistance systems, and advanced emission testing. New rules also support digital registration and inspection documents, easier cross-border data sharing, and protection against odometer fraud. “This is a step towards safer, cleaner roads,” said an EU official.

A key focus is reducing risks posed by outdated or unsafe vehicles. Older cars often escape proper checks, and a small number of high-emission vehicles contribute significantly to pollution. The update aims to close these gaps and modernise procedures to match current technologies. Fraud prevention and better data access for testing centers are also central to the proposal.

The plan supports the EU’s “Vision Zero” target: no road deaths by 2050 and a 50% drop in serious injuries by 2030. If adopted, the reforms could save 7,000 lives and prevent 65,000 serious injuries by 2050. The European Parliament and Council will now review the proposal.
