In 2024, Italy achieved a major milestone in container traffic, surpassing 12 million TEUs, representing a growth of 5.5% or over 620,000 units compared to the previous year. This achievement, documented in Ship2Shore’s annual report, was made possible through collaboration between terminal operators and port authorities, despite challenges in acquiring data from certain global networks. The growth exceeded expectations, driven by reliable projections and refined estimates, and highlighted Gioia Tauro’s pivotal role, which neared 4 million TEUs—one-third of the nation’s total container traffic.
The report also detailed regional variations in port performance. Liguria’s ports showed strong results, with Genoa up 2.2% and La Spezia achieving an impressive 8.7% growth. In contrast, Adriatic ports faced significant challenges, with Ravenna (-8%), Ancona (-12%), and Bari (-28%) reporting declines. Campania performed well, with Naples (+8%) and Salerno (+5%) maintaining positive momentum. Other notable improvements included Trieste and Cagliari, while mixed performances were observed in Venice.
Individual terminals exhibited contrasting outcomes. Gioia Tauro grew by 11%, while Taranto suffered a sharp decline of 60%. The South showed resilience, with Pozzallo (+13%) and Palermo (+8%) leading gains, while Genoa’s IMT Messina posted a remarkable 26% growth. Despite challenges in certain areas, Italy’s overall container sector displayed robust progress, reinforcing its global shipping presence.
