Lloyd’s Register (LR) and CORE POWER have launched a study to assess the feasibility of nuclear propulsion in container shipping. This initiative, supported by A.P. Moller – Maersk, focuses on using advanced fourth-generation reactors to power feeder container ships operating in European ports. The research aims to address safety regulations and operational guidelines necessary for integrating nuclear energy into the maritime sector, paving the way for sustainable shipping solutions.
The study will provide insights into updated safety standards and regulatory frameworks required for nuclear-powered vessels, helping maritime stakeholders explore nuclear energy as a pathway to achieving net-zero emissions. By combining LR’s advisory expertise, CORE POWER’s nuclear technology, and Maersk’s shipping knowledge, the project seeks to shape the future of decarbonized shipping.
Leaders involved highlight the potential of nuclear power for clean energy in shipping. LR CEO Nick Brown views it as key to emissions-free operations, while CORE POWER CEO Mikal Bøe emphasizes nuclear’s role in achieving net-zero targets. Maersk’s Ole Graa Jakobsen notes that if safety and regulatory challenges are overcome, nuclear power could become a viable energy solution within the next decade.
