A survey by the European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO) across twelve EU Member States shows growing interest in battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). Despite cost concerns, 57% of non-electric car drivers are considering purchasing an electric vehicle in the future.
Aligned with the European Green Deal‘s aim to cut transport emissions by 90% by 2050, BEVs are crucial. They are considered a mature technology, yet adoption rates vary by country. Understanding consumer attitudes, as per the EAFO survey of 19,000 respondents, is vital for effective policy.
Respondents cite environmental benefits and cost efficiency as BEV advantages, with price being a major barrier for two-thirds. Still, a third plan to buy an electric vehicle within five years. Key concerns include cost comparisons with fossil fuel cars and driving range needs.
BEV drivers prioritize convenient recharging infrastructure, minimal wait times, and clear pricing. Challenges include insufficient recharging stations during cross-border travel. Awareness of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies is high among BEV drivers, with most interested in V2G-enabled vehicles.
The EU’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation aims to establish a reliable cross-border recharging network to support BEV adoption.
